The countdown to Christmas is already under way, and for anyone planning a direct mail campaign in the run-up to the festive period, the calendar is tighter than it looks. Royal Mail has now published its recommended last posting dates for Christmas 2026. But if you’re sending a campaign rather than a handful of cards, the real deadline is much earlier than the date on the list.
These are the last recommended dates for Royal Mail’s standard UK services:
| Service | Last recommended posting date |
| 2nd Class and 2nd Class Signed For | Friday 18 December |
| Royal Mail Tracked 48 | Saturday 19 December |
| 1st Class and 1st Class Signed For | Monday 21 December |
| Royal Mail Tracked 24 | Monday 21 December |
| Special Delivery Guaranteed | Wednesday 23 December |
Royal Mail points out that these dates are correct at the time of publishing and are subject to change, and it advises posting as early as possible. It also expects to run extra deliveries until 8pm in the run-up to Christmas to cope with demand.
These dates are aimed at items that are ready to post. A direct mail campaign has several stages to get through before it reaches the postal network:
A campaign of tens of thousands of pieces can’t be produced and handed over in a day. As a rule, the later the artwork and data arrive, the less flexibility everyone has if something needs correcting.
The best approach is to decide when you want your mail to land, and then work back from there:
Royal Mail has indicated that the last service before Christmas will run on Thursday 24 December, with services resuming on Tuesday 29 December. [Please verify against Royal Mail’s published schedule before publishing.] Don’t forget to include [Cavalier’s own Christmas closing and reopening dates] so clients know when we’ll be able to process their jobs.
If your campaign isn’t specifically tied to Christmas, it may be worth considering a post-Christmas drop. Doormats are typically much quieter in the first weeks of January, when people are thinking about new year plans, resolutions and budgets, so a well-timed mailing can stand out more. It also takes the pressure off the production schedule, and gives you time to get your data and creative right.
Whether you’re looking to get a campaign into homes before Christmas or to line up a strong start to 2027, the earlier we’re involved the better. Our team can help with data preparation, production scheduling and choosing the right postal service for your timescales.
